Making artwork is work. Time and Materials, a show of new paintings by Tim McKay, considers the monetary and psychological costs of making art. McKay believes all art draws on experience and memory, but does understanding the inspiration behind an artwork make it more meaningful or less meaningful? Does knowing the hours and dollars needed to make art detract from or enhance its impact? Does artistic transparency reinforce or minimize a viewers’ own thoughts and feelings about an artwork? Time and Materials invites conversation about these questions. In the exhibit, extensive gallery tag information is provided, but obscured, so viewers can actively choose how much to learn about each painting and consider their own preferences as participants in a gallery experience.

Zoom with the Artist Saturday, March 14, at 2 PM & Wednesday, March 18, at 7 PM

Please join us for a session hosted by Tim McKay to discuss his show, Time and Materials.  In each session, Tim will briefly introduce the premise of his show, followed by Q and A and a group discussion. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences about the need or desire for “backstory” when viewing art and the “work” involved in making artwork.

Seeing the show in-person is NOT a prerequisite for attending. You can view art from the show here.
