Who is a “true American” anymore? Bombarded by always-on news and social media memes, Americans are pressed to take sides on every issue, with prophecies of dire consequences for society if the “other side” wins.

American Experiment asks its viewers to question outside pressures to conform and encourages people to think for themselves through paintings and repurposed objects.

A set of four paintings form the center of the show, which deconstruct the American Pledge of Allegiance into meditations on phrases commonly said but seldom thought through in a modern context (One Nation; Under God; Indivisible, with Liberty; And Justice for All ).

Other works invite consideration that what we believe to be “true” may be incomplete and lacking nuance, as well as offering moments to slow down and determine for oneself how one truly thinks and feels about living in America today.

On July 9 at 2 PM, Brian Cavanaugh and Tim McKay, will discuss their concurrent shows, Yankee Doodle (Cavanaugh) and American Experiment (McKay) highlighting the intersection of art and American life and what their shows add to the national conversation.
