Series: World of Many Peoples (WOMP) #23 - #51 (DAM Variations)

WOMP #23 - #51 form a sub-series in the World of Many Peoples series, which incorporates a number ideas promoted by the Color Field painter, Ellsworth Kelly. Kelly completed many works based on collage on postcard during a period in his career where his studio was exceptionally small. Kelly also included architectural reference in much of his work. In his style, he used architectural objects (e.g., buildings, windows, stairs) as means of introducing specific shapes in his paintings, but the paintings themselves were not about these objects--they were only shapes that were placed in color fields, and many times it is difficult to tell which objects in his paintings are figure (foreground) and ground (background). In addition, Kelly was enamored with the idea of randomness. He has many works which were composed of square paintings, randomized, and then joined into a single work.

The DAM Variations start with a single postcard image which shows parts of the three buildings which compose the Denver Art Museum, with seven of the same postcards washed with one of the seven WOMP colors. Thick and thin strips of acrylic paper, painted with the WOMP colors were then randomly selected by an algorithm and assigned to a each postcard. A color was then randomly assigned to each postcard which was used to paint directly on the card. Works were then created using these constraints and form the bulk of Group 8.1. The remaining paintings in the series scale larger, but retain the proportions of the postcards.

Group 8.2 starts with recreating the postcards produced in Group 8.1 as paper paintings in a larger format. All paintings in this group start with the same underpainting, are washed with a WOMP color, and some variations from Group 8.1 in terms of color and line placement are introduced. Group 8.3 scales larger again, and reproduces the 8.2 paintings on canvas, with additional color/line variations.

Group 8.4 draws on some of the color schemes and relationships in Group 8.3, and retains the geometrical relationships between objects in the DAM postcard, but continues the deconstruction of objects and increases the distance between the original image and the produced works.

Group 8.5 increases the referential distance further. Pieces are larger, and start with pours of liquid acrylic mixtures on canvas. Figure and ground become more blurred. The relationships between objects retain primary and secondary geometries found within the postcards, but the distance from the buildings themselves grows greater.

Group 8.6 is composed of one painting. It is the largest painting in the series, and is the final abstraction from the original architectural objects, which are present, but secondary to the geometrical relationships. Group 8.7 is the last work in the series. It returns the series full-circle to a collage work (canvas scraps left over from the acrylic pour for WOMP # 51), and has no true relationship to the postcard image. Colors and line placement were determined through an algorithm, with limited artist choices introduced through a random process.
